This is a beautiful Ghanaian Traditional Slipper. Ahenema is the local name for this Traditional Ghanaian pair of Slippers. It is a local sandal usually used by chiefs, queens, elderly people in the society and the rich or well-to-do in society. It is the royal footwear of the Akan and symbolizes pure elegance and class. It is worn during traditional events like festivals, funerals, marriage ceremonies and also worn for church functions in modern times.

Lately, the Ahenema has become a general fashion item such that anyone who can afford it can buy and use it just like the traditional Kente cloth.

History explains that during the olden days, when these sandals were made for Chiefs, it was supposed to be named after the King but since the name of the King was not supposed to be mentioned in vain, they rather named the sandals after the children of the Kings and hence the name Ahenema which translates as “The King’s Children”.
